A book designed to help you navigate breast cancer with clarity and hope.

Beauty After Breast Cancer is a comprehensive yet uplifting book that shows different surgery results and options in a reassuring format. Through photos, stories and tips, nurse and bilateral mastectomy patient Katelyn Carey helps patients to reclaim their bodies and reconnect with themselves after a breast cancer diagnosis. This book was created by a medical team and 50 breast cancer patients as the resource we wish we’d had, providing answers to the questions:

  • What are the first steps I need to know, presented in a way I can process easily?

  • What do different surgical options look like on real people, in different stages of healing?

  • What am I going to feel like and look like throughout this experience?

  • How do I get back to feeling like myself again, how do I find a new normal and regain my confidence?

  • What have others like me found most helpful in making their decisions, and in recovering from this disease?

And most importantly we address the question- how am I going to get through this?

Beauty After Breast Cancer features the stories and bare-chested portraits of 38 different breast cancer patients who have all chosen different surgical options: from bilateral mastectomy, to partial/unilateral mastectomy, to lumpectomy. Some chose reconstruction, others chose not to reconstruct. Some chose cosmetic tattoos, others chose nothing (or things like sunflowers!). In this book you will find information on surgical options, information on how to navigate conversations with medical caregivers, and tips for recovery on both a physical and psychological level. This book can meet you where you’re at, and help you (or a loved one) heal from that place moving forward.

Additional Reviews

The professional and gorgeous photos of women are full of joy, and the attitude is that they may have lost a body part, but they didn't lose what is most important. This book should be in every single breast surgeon's office.     -But doctor...I hate pink

[This] book is changing women's lives, encouraging each survivor to love themselves, their scars and their journey. -Breast Cancer Answers

The book does not push a particular agenda, [and is easily] absorbed at whatever pace feels comfortable...it kind of functions as a private support group- one you can dip into whenever you need it.     -Amy, Breast Friends award nomination

Beauty After Breast Cancer excels in presenting the emotional journey that can accompany breast cancer [and simultaneously] conveys a message of hope. Hope that after the ordeal of breast cancer treatment and diagnosis, there is the possibility of a life not only filled with beauty, but in which it is possible to feel beautiful.    -The Lancet Oncology

When it comes to a heart-wrenching diagnosis, there must be more than numbers shown in order to make a patient, rather, a human being, comfortable and prepared to take on medical options and keep themselves optimistic. There is a severe lack of compassion when it's needed most. Beauty after Breast Cancer is the solution to this crucial issue.    -Nikki Erlick, Redbook Magazine

The Beauty After Breast Cancer book created exactly what had been missing from breast cancer education!  Real women who have had real breast cancer surgeries both mastectomy and lumpectomy with and without breast reconstruction.  This book honored the courageousness of many depicted women through their cancer journey and created what my patients were wanting to see and know so badly to help with their surgery choices!  There really was nothing else like it prior to the inception and everyone who has viewed the book is grateful for the realness, the sharing, and the hope!  -Oncology Nurse Navigator, Kate Newgard

With one foot in the medical world and one foot in the patient world, Katelyn Carey had the experience and knowledge it takes to create a life-changing book aimed at individuals diagnosed with breast cancer. This book is not an insipid pamphlet or images lined with statistics. It is a work of art that is accomplishing exactly what modern medicine would not.   -Samantha Matcovsky, Huffington Post

Holy crap this book is phenomenal!    -Xeni, Editor of BoingBoing.net

This is not just a book for breast cancer patients, this is a book for everyone. The inspirational stories, that adjustment of learning to love our bodies as they are, the celebration of life and beauty- everyone needs to read this.   -Lori, Ashland Community Hospital Volunteer
